本组大同老照片是彭德尔顿于1931年夏到绥远省（今内蒙古）考察和拍摄后，在返回北平的途中拍摄的60幅大同照片。注意彭德尔顿是土壤学家，所以他的照片中出现了大量的“土壤”，是这批照片的重要特色。
